Orlando Clinic Chosen for Trial of Breakthrough Varicose Vein Treatment

Orlando, FL – November 14, 2001 – A breakthrough new treatment for varicose veins could relieve the suffering of millions without the need for painful surgery. The technique, known as Varisolve®, was developed by Spanish vascular surgeon Dr. Juan Cabrera, and will soon be tested by doctors at the Vascular Center of Orlando as part of a Phase III clinical trial.

Varisolve® involves no surgery, no anesthetic, and virtually no discomfort. Under ultrasound guidance, a special foam containing a "sclerosing agent" is injected into the troublesome vein. As it is held in place by the foam, the sclerosing agent causes the vein to shrink and disappear. The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes and is performed in a doctor's office, not a hospital. Initial trials in England have shown an 81% cure rate after one treatment.

Dr. Daniel Thomas and Dr. Samuel Martin at the Vascular Center of Orlando—one of only 14 clinics in the United States chosen to participate in the trial—hope that Varisolve® will become an effective part of their arsenal against varicose veins. Dr. Thomas and Martin have over 35 years of combined experience, and have been pioneers in the non-surgical and minimally-invasive treatment of unwanted veins. They will now help determine if Varisolve® is the answer millions of varicose vein sufferers have been waiting for. If the trials go as well as expected, the Center could be using Varisolve® as a regular treatment for its patients in the near future.
